New. Artisanal. Now. at 6020 Wilshire Blvd in July 2012

The ForYourArt pop-up shop at 6020 Wilshire Blvd. showcased some of the city’s finest food crafters selected by culinary insiders Krista Simmons (Top Chef Masters/LAist), Shawna Dawson (Artisanal LA) and Michaele Musel (The Secret Fork). The event featured 12 local producers, listed below, who sold and sampled their wares—everything from caramels and ice cream to olives and drinking vinegars.

Coinciding with Made in L.A. 2012, ForYourArt presented New. Artisanal. Now., a one-day food biennial on July 28, 2012. Made in L.A. was the Hammer Museum’s first large-scale biennial survey of Los Angeles artists. The exhibition is spread out over different neighborhoods and venues and highlights artists at various stages in their careers. “New. Artisanal. Now.” followed a similar vein in bringing together a number of L.A. food experiences.

Libations were presented by GreenBar Collective. Other features of the event included special edition tote bags sold to benefit local food charity Food Forward, a reading table filled with artisanal food publications, and a DJ. Information about Made in L.A 2012 and voting on the Mohn Award, an award given to one of the exhibition’s 60 artists, was available throughout the day.

Simmons said of her choices: “I wanted to select producers who embody what it means to be an independent, entrepreneurial, creative spirit. Food crafters like Edward Belden of Peddler’s Creamery, whose ice creams are churned on the back of his beach cruiser, and boutique shrub-maker Susan Finesman, who applies age-old, colonial preservation techniques to farm-fresh produce, really showcase that. Aside from the deliciousness of it all, these products are incredibly beautiful from an aesthetic standpoint. This will be a real showcase of food porn, that’s for sure.”
